rebirth

i know it's only may and with summer knocking at our front doors we're all gearing up for bbq's, cold brews and reggae, but i thought i'd bring this blog back into action since i didn't really make good use of the idea. at least in this case we'll all be armed and ready for october.

as a token of good will, i give you the scariest fucking album i've yet to hear in my 23 years.

wolf eyes - human animal

this album is all over the place. sounds like all the demons of hell and fallen angels are just kicking it by the lake of fire listening to dub, free jazz, and the screams of the damned. quite the party.

dancing zombies

went to month of macabre at the baby bar again last night AND IT WAS AWESOME. they showed dance of the dead and devil dog: the hound of hell. i really loved dance of the dead, i had never even heard of it but now it's easily one of my favorite horror comedies. devil dog was perfect mystery science theatre fodder and just what you'd want from a 70's horror flick. all in all a great night that's got me looking forward to next monday and wednesday.

in honor of zombie invested high school dances, here's some horror/scifi themed albums i used to rock as a young'n...

aokigahara

one night i fell asleep watching an episode of destination truth on hulu. destination truth is one of those reality-tv-style paranormal investigation shows, and it is by far the cheesiest. the host of the show seems like such a tool... anyways, in the episode i fell asleep to they were investigating a haunted forest at the base of mount fuji in japan. the forest is known as aokigahara, or, "the sea of trees." aokigahara is reportedly the world's second most popular suicide location after the golden gate bridge. since the 1950's more than 500 people have lost their lives in the forest, approximately 30 bodies are found every year.

if i were ever to find myself hiking through aokigahara, or any other haunted forest for that matter, i would have a pair of headphones and these two albums handy.

wolves in the throne room - two hunters

my favorite WITTR album. transcendental atmospheric eco-spiritual black metal (HA!) at it's best. love everything about this band, look 'em up.

mount eerie - wind's poem

new phil elvrum joint continuing where black wooden ceiling opening left off. largely inspired by black metal and his "relatively newfound affinity for xasthur and other lynchpins of the unholy genre." really really rather good.

this is the curse of the mummy

cell phone camera quality! let the right one in @ the baby bar last night. didn't stick around for the second movie, but it was a good time despite some technical difficulties and small turnout. does anyone in this town like horror movies? then let's go. every monday and wednesday thanks to the month of macabre peepz.

i got a couple days off this week and i'm feelin' pretty good, so here's some feel good spooky dub jams...

scientist - rids the world of the evil curse of the vampires

my favorite dub album. i love that spaced out shit, the horror themes are just an added bonus. if you don't already have this, download it now y' damn fool.

a few selected tracks from toni's breaks 6 hallowe'en dub

more blatantly halloween-y than the scientist album, nice use of classic horror sound effects mixed in with the breaks. couldn't find the entire album, unfortunately, but a nice handful of good tracks nonetheless.

låt den rätte komma in

tonight at the baby bar the good people of the month of macabre are showing my #1 favorite vampire movie, let the right one in. i can't say enough good things about this movie, so if yr free tonight around 8:00 come kick it with me and we'll watch 12 year old vampires speak swedish and fall in love during the 80's. it's a vampire movie, yes, but it's also just a damn good movie (probably my favorite from 2008) so don't be hesitant if yr not a fan of the genre.

here's the flyer:

after let the right one in they'll be showing house on sorority row - hopefully the 1983 version and not the 2009 remake, but i guess we'll find out. tonight!

be sure to check the month of macabre blog pretty often, every monday and wednesday in october they'll be showing movies at the baby bar and i'm sure they'll put together some other events as well. i'm gonna try to be at as many of them as i can.

a crying woman is a scheming woman

i watched the movie antichrist the other the day and it was pretty unsettling. directed by the self-proclaimed "biggest director in the world," lars von trier, it has been called "the most misogynist movie from the self-proclaimed biggest director in the world." i don't wanna ruin anything for anyone, but i'll just say that at some point in the movie willem dafoe cums blood. gotta love the talking fox though; chaos reigns! anyways, the movie was either about witches or how all women are inherently evil. so, here's some witch jams for you...

spires that in the sunset rise - four winds the walker

i've had this album for awhile now and it's still one of the creepiest things i've ever heard. sounds like what real witches would make if they set up a recording studio in the forest and the whole coven had a jam session. good creepy stuff, but not too creepy.

the goslings - occasion

haunting, beautiful, fucking crushing. innocents being slaughtered, witches wailing. i love this album. highly recommended.

bela lugosi is dead

the midnight movie at the garland tonight is universal's 1931 classic horror film dracula staring bela lugosi. there will be a vampire costume contest, so dust off yr capes and sharpen yr fangs and practice that transylvanian accent because the best costumes will win a prize.

i plan on heading up to the theatre after work, so anyone willing to join should gimme a call or just meet up with me there. hopefully i'll have a bag of vampire fangs so anyone who forgets to dress up won't feel left out.

if you need help getting ready for the blood-sucking festivities or yr just looking for some extra campy songs for that ultimate halloween mixtape, here's this 1958 novelty lp from legendary horror host john zacherle. surf/rock/horror jazz to get yr halloween groove on.

zacherle - dinner with drac!

completely ridiculous, completely great.
